Temples of Fire are testing grounds for Juju Men. They are often placed as barriers between the Juju Man and items or knowledge that will help him thwart a Deadside Entity's machinations.
However, a Deadside Entity that utilises a Temple of Fire is playing with a two edged sword as within the Temples reside the Gads, magical voodoo tattoos that grant a Juju Man extra powers. A Juju Man who manages to overcome the challenges of a Temple of Fire may claim, not only the things he needs to defeat a Deadside Entity, but also a permanent improvement to his (or her) abilities.
A Temple of Fire can be found as a result of a search roll at a Deadside encounter site. On turning up the Temple of Fire card the Juju Man is transported to the Temple immediately. In each Temple of Fire the Juju Man will be presented with a series of platforms standing in lava. The Juju Man must make his way to the exit in a single series of activation rolls. Moving from one platform to an adjacent platform is a move.
Each time a new platform is encountered a roll will be made on the Temple traps table to see what, if anything, the Juju Man has triggered. Traps can be blades, spikes, fire, crumbling platforms or creatures. The possibilities are endless. Each trap that the Juju Man triggers attacks with a starting activation target of 4 and attacks, usually doing a single point of damage each time, until it fails an activation roll. This means that a single trap may inflict quite a bit of damage but there is a chance the Juju Man will avoid it altogether.
If a Juju Man fails to complete a Temple of Fire he returns to the Marrow Gates and the Deadside Entity chalks up another Juju Man kill. If the Juju Man succeeds he will gain a major item towards completing the current scenario and a Gad. Gads are magical voodoo tattoos that permanently add to a Juju Man's power and stay with him or her in successive scenarios.
Gads and their efffects are detailed in the Juju Man rulebook where you will also find an couple of examples of Temples of Fire.
I've depicted my Temple of Fire with my Dungeon Blocks and some resin traps, doors and effects. The Temple floor is an A3 sheet of craft foam which cost £0.80 from Hobbycraft. If you don't have 3D items to make a Temple you can use floorplans or just draw one out on paper. |
